| Technical Update | ||
| Medical
Device Directive (MDD)(93/42/EEC), which regulates the marketing and use
of medical devices in Europe, is potentially being revised to state that
all medical devices containing phthalates should be labelled as such from
2011. As DEHP (di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate) is the dominant plasticizer
used in PVC, this would therefore include any devices containing PVC components.
The revision to the directive has been proposed due to a concern over the phthalate’s effect on health. It is hoped that the implementation of a labeling system will help to phase out all medical equipment containing PVC products (especially with DEHP content), without imposing a ban on the substance. For this reason, MGE have taken pre-emptive action and begun removing any PVC components, where possible, from our SAM range of suction units. Our PVC tubing, both internally and externally, has already been replaced with silicon tubing, and plans are underway for replacing the units’ fascia labels. It is intended that by the time this proposed directive is due to take effect, all new MGE SAM units will be PVC free. For your information, spare part numbers and prices that relate to the tubing change from PVC to Silicon will remain the same. If

| NEW CARRY CASE FOR THE SAM 420 | ||
|
A new grey carry case, designed to provide privacy and discretion to users of the SAM 420. Following a request from one of our customers who specialises in the private and home-user medical markets, MGE have designed a new carry case for the SAM 420 portable suction unit. Research has indicated that regular users of the SAM 420 in the community would like a new case to provide more discretion for the unit. The new grey carry case is designed to ‘disguise’ the SAM 420, helping to reduce its appearance as a piece of medical equipment. It provides total cover for the 420 and, in particular, prevents the collection vessel from being visible at all times and the front is easily detached and re-sealed as required. Our new grey case has been manufactured to the same specifications and high standards as our existing green case and as with the current version, allows for the SAM 420 to be transported using the fixed carry handle or an adjustable shoulder strap. Both carry bags can be purchased for new or existing SAM 420 units offering two choices depending on the individual needs and its intended use. For additional information on the new SAM 420 carry case and the SAM range of suction units, please contact Sara Holloway on tel +44 (0)1206 842244 or by email at marketing@mgelectric.co.uk |

| NEW TROLLEY FOR OPERATING THEATRE SUCTION | ||
| The
high volume capacity theatre suction trolley from MGE now available as
part of the SAM range. Following customer requests and feedback from a prototype displayed at MEDICA 2005, this carousel style trolley has been specially designed for operating theatre use where large volumes of fluid require suction. Designed for use with the SAM 50 pipeline range of suction regulators, the system offers high flow, high vacuum performance providing maximum collection capacity whilst using the minimum of theatre space. The
flexible design supports most disposable liner systems and ensures the
SAM 50 trolley can be used with 1, 2 or 3 litre collection vessels,
connected in series, in any combination providing a total collection
capacity of well over 30 litres. The ergonomic design has gone through
stringent testing to provide the required functionality with ease of
use for the operator and the robust trolley, mounted on anti-static
casters and of modular steel construction can withstand the rigours
of a theatre environment. The new SAM 50 suction trolley demonstrating a collection capacity of 30 litres will be available to view at MEDICA 2006 in Dusseldorf from 15 to 18 November where MGE can be found in hall 11, stand B67.
